Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon Yeast
  • 8 oz (225 gram) Plain flour plus extra for dusting
  • 4 tablespoon Caster sugar
  • 5 fl oz (150 ml) Warmed milk
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Egg beaten
  • 1.7 oz (50 gram) Butter
  • 10 fl oz (300 ml) Vegetable oil
  • Jam of your choice
  • Powdered sugar for garnishing
Instructions
  1. Mix the yeast with a half a teaspoon of caster sugar and two tablespoons of warm milk.

  2. Now place it in a warm place to rest, for about 15 minutes or until frothy.

  3. Then sift the flour and salt into a large bowl and add 1 tablespoon of sugar.

  4. Now make a well in the flour and pour in the yeast mix, the rest of the milk, the melted butter and the egg.

  5. Then mix to make a dough and then knead it and cover the bowl.

  6. Leave it to rest for 45 minutes or until the dough has doubled in size.

  7. Now on a floured work surface, knead the dough for 5 minutes and divide it into 12 balls.

  8. Place them in a warm place for 30 minutes or until they have doubled in size.

  9. Then heat the oil in a deep pan, until it reaches 375⁰ F or 175⁰ C.

  10. Now gently lower the dough balls one at a time into the hot oil in batches of two or three and fry for 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown and then turn over.

  11. Remove it from the hot oil and drain on kitchen paper.

  12. Then roll the hot doughnuts in the remaining sugar.

  13. Make a small slit in the doughnuts with the tip of a knife and fill it with a teaspoon of jam.

SERVE
  1. Decorate it on a plate by garnishing with powdered sugar and serve hot.
