Chapati or Indian flatbread is a very ambiguous word in Indian cooking. It’s generally made with whole wheat flour. In India, everyone needs chapati for a comfortable and healthy life. Making chapati is one of the most basic skills of Indian cooking. I myself learned how to make chapati from my mom; it’s a staple food that every Indian daughter learns to cook. I have one big secret that I really dislike making chapati but today I am presenting you in spite of my dislikeness… 🙂

In India, everyone needs chapati for a comfortable and healthy life. Making chapati is one of the most basic skills of Indian cooking.

  • 2 cup Whole wheat flour
  • ¾ cup Water preferably warm
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 1 teaspoon White oil optional
  1. Siege the whole wheat flour in a large bowl.

  2. Add ½ teaspoon of oil and salt and mix it well.

  3. Now make a well with wheat flour and add ½ of the water in that well.

  4. Then begin to knead the dough.

  5. Add little more water to it, and it will slowly start coming together in a ball shape.

  6. Now start kneading with your fist and knuckles, till it is soft.

  7. NOTE

    It takes about 12 minutes to make the dough. The dough should not be sticking to your hand.

  8. Once the dough is ready, smear a ½ teaspoon of oil over the dough.

  9. Cover the dough with cling film or a wet cloth and keep it aside for at least 10 minutes.

  10. Now roll the dough into a thick log shape and cut 15 equal size portions.

  11. Take one dough piece and make it to a smooth ball.

  12. Flatten it lightly and coat it in flour on both sides.

  13. NOTE

    Keep the remaining ball covered with a damp cloth.

  14. Meanwhile turn on the gas stove and put the griddle to become hot.

  15. Dust your board surface with flour.

  16. Gently using a floured rolling pin, roll out the dough piece.

  17. NOTE

    Round the chapatis for about 6 to 8 inches in diameter.

    Once the skillet gets hot, sprinkle a pinch of flour. If it gets brown fast it means griddle is hot.

  19. Place the chapatis gently on the griddle.

  20. After 10 to 12 seconds flip it.

  21. Now grill the chapati for 1 minute more.

  22. Once you see there are brown spots on the underside, flip it over.

  23. Now turn the gas on high flame and take the chapati off the griddle and place it on direct flame.

  24. The chapati should start getting puffed up.

  25. Toast the chapati on direct flame for 6 to 7 seconds and let it puffs up completely.

  26. Repeat these steps for each dough balls.

  1. Smear ghee or butter on top surface and serve them hot or keep them aside covered with cloth or wrap them in aluminum foil to keep them warm and soft.
